Aligned with the themes of the QMUL Model, the field trip was designed to help improve student employability after graduation. Students covered a wide range of topics: chemicals and the environment (COSHH, water quality, environmental sampling); health & safety (risk assessment, manual handling, COSHH); good academic practice (scientific writing and referencing, report structure, writing styles); experimental design & data handling; business operations of a Field Studies Centre (education & teaching of field studies, hospitality, administration, maintenance);conservation & animal welfare, including an overview of current UK environmental legislation; plus a careers workshop helping students to improve their CVs, write cover letters, interview practice, and tips on how to get a ‘foot in the door’ with science jobs.
