The discovery by Dr Matt Struebig of a rare leaf-nosed bat has appeared in several newspapers in the UK and overseas. Working in a small area of forest in Sumatra (Indonesia), Dr Struebig - a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow based in SBCS - recorded the first ever Ridley's leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros ridleyi) on the island. The survey, conducted with colleagues from the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology and the Zoological Society of London, also recorded sun bears, Malayan tapirs and several primates. These discoveries are especially important because they highlight the importance of preserving even small patches of Indonesia’s rainforests at a time when much of the island’s natural habitat is being cleared for oil palm plantations.
