Research interests:

I am a freshwater ecologist seeking to advance understanding of freshwater ecosystems such that they can be better protected and managed sustainably in a changing environment. I head the River Communities Group, based at the FBA River Laboratory in Dorset. I work with invertebrate, algal, and plant communities in both running and standing waters, and develop practical applications for assessing the impacts upon them. My work involves the development of new tools for lake, stream and deep river communities, with particular reference to the quantification of uncertainty in assessments. I am also involved in projects that aim to understand more fully the relationship between community structure and ecosystem functioning, and have conducted large scale experiments manipulating a well-characterised and quantified food web, for which we have highly-resolved data, by first introducing an additional predator to the top of the web and subsequently by altering the availability and quality of the food at the base of the web.
