Project title: The Diversity and Roles of Endogenous Viral Elements in Chiroptera: a Phylogenomic Study

Summary: Retroviruses have been infecting mammals for at least 100 million years, leaving descendants in host genomes known as endogenous retroviruses (ERVs). Although most endogenous viral elements (EVEs) found in host genomes are inactive 'viral fossils', EVEs can become co-opted by the host as virus-derived, functional genes (often with immune related functions). The project aims to identify and characterise the diversity of EVEs across Chiropteran taxa using genomic and transcriptomic data.
