Project Title: Chemical and biological catalysis
Summary: My PhD focuses on the analysis of DNA repair pathways in Trypanosoma brucei, a protozoan parasite that causes Human African Trypanosomiasis. Current treatment for Human African Trypanosomiasis contains many flaws. In particular; it is very limited, has many resistance pathways and most importantly, is toxic to the patient.
By analysing key DNA repair proteins in the parasite, new anti-parasitic drugs and vaccines can be created that are cheaper, easier to use and significantly less lethal. This will involve a combination of gene cloning, RNA interference, over expression & epitope tagging studies on a variety of repair proteins which function to fix double strand breaks in DNA.
