Entry requirements
Entry requirements
You should view the relevant programme pages for specific entry requirements, however please see below for general entry requirements for programmes offered at the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences.
Only first year entry is available on all programmes.
Students who have already started on one programme in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences and not completed this, cannot normally apply to start again on a different programme in the School.
We do not usually accept students who have already started their studies at a different institution, even for first year entry.
Please note that we maintain the right to reject applications containing any form of plagiarism.
A level/GCSE qualifications
For most programmes we ask for applicants to obtain 300 to 340 UCAS tariff points at A2 level, from three subjects. We usually require you to have taken Biology and/or Chemistry A2. Please see below for general entry requirements:
If 3 A2 level subjects are offered than a 4th subject at A2 or AS level is not essential, and points achieved from subjects taken to AS level only will not be counted. Points from a 4th A2 level will also normally not be counted towards the tariff points.
General Studies are not normally counted for admissions purposes at either AS and A2 level, or in other qualifying exams.
A grade C or higher in GCSE English Language and Mathematics is required.
Where no specific Chemistry requirement is stated, students will need at least CC in GCSE Double Science or GCSE Chemistry C.
In addition to specifically required subjects, other A2 level subjects should normally be in another science, English, a language, a traditional humanity or Social Science. Vocational subjects at A2 level are usually not accepted.
Non A level qualifications
Vocational Qualifications and foundation degrees
Admission with vocational qualifications (e.g. BTEC, Access course) or foundation programmes from other universities is only considered where there is clear evidence of exceptional quality and when we are satisfied that the qualification offered is of sufficient academic rigour; this may involve an interview. All applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. The qualifications are not accepted for all programmes. More details can be found on the individual programme pages.
International Equivalents
We accept international equivalents of UK A levels, however it is important that the qualification is considered to be of the same standard as UK A levels.
Qualifications we accept include the International Baccalaureate, the Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish qualifications, European Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, the German Abitur, Polish Matura. The main College website contains information on which international qualifications are recognised by Queen Mary, University of London. Please click here for details.
