Fees and funding for research programmes

Financial costs of study

Undertaking a postgraduate programme is a serious commitment and involves careful financial planning. Your costs will comprise tuition fees, living costs and, in some cases, bench fees.

The cost of living in London depends on the lifestyle you choose to live. Typically, postgraduates need at least £8500 per annum to cover food, accommodation, travel, books and so on (plus about £3000 for each dependent).

Funding opportunities

PhD Studentships

The School of Biological and Chemical Sciences offers around 15 fully-funded research studentships annually. Please refer to the PhD Studentships page for further information and details of how to apply for a studentship.

International students

Queen Mary provides a number of Overseas Research Students Awards each year to assist students in meeting the cost of the overseas rate of tuition fee. Normally the amount of the award is the difference between the overseas and home fee rates. These awards are highly competitive, awarded on academic merit and research potential. For further details please visit the Overseas Research Students Award Scheme website.

You are also strongly encouraged to contact your own Ministry of Education or Education Department, who will have details of most funding schemes and who will be able to advise you of your own government's conditions for studying abroad. You should also contact the nearest British Council office in your own country, which will have details of scholarship schemes and provide information and advice on educational programmes and living in the UK.

If there is no British Council office, then contact the nearest British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. There is additionally funding available from sources such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank and the European Commission, whom you should contact directly.
