Queen Mary, University of London is one of the leading universities in the UK, recently ranked 11th by the Guardian. Similarly, the Times Higher called Queen Mary “the biggest star among the research-intensive institutions" when it moved from 48th in 2001 to 13th in the 2008 Times Higher Education table. The School is known for its high quality research, which translates into high quality teaching.
Queen Mary is located in one of the most vibrant and interesting areas of London: East London is home to areas such as Shoreditch, Brick Lane, Bow and Whitechapel, attracting a young, active and diverse population. Many students live in London communities - some close by and others further afield. Transportation links make travel to QM easy with central London only 10 minutes away by tube. Many students elect to live on campus as Queen Mary boasts a large selection of campus residences.
The School of Biological and Chemical Sciences offers a broad choice of degree programmes, ranging from Environmental Science to Chemistry and Biochemistry, to Biomedical Studies and Genetics. SBCS offers arguably the best portfolio of field work courses of any UK university with locations in Scotland, Wales, sites along the Thames Estuary and also travel abroad, for example the new field course on Tropical Biology in Borneo, staff research and teaching research trips to the Pyrenees and Kenya.
3rd year students augment their studies, choosing from a wide range of independent or group research projects. Some examples from past years include:

If your project is field-based, you may even find yourself working abroad. Recent international projects have included studying dolphins off the coast of Ireland, population genetics in the Pyrenees and invasive fish species in African lakes.

Work in other research institutions is also possible, particularly as we have close links with St Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospital, the Institute of Zoology and the Natural History Museum.
