Funding and projects

The School of Biological and Chemical Sciences recruits over 40 PhD students every year.

Most studentships* due to commence in September/October will be advertised on this website the preceding November/December. 

Occasionally we advertise studentships at other times of the year and these can be found on the Find a PhD website.

Approximately 50% of our studentships are funded by Research Councils. We are currently offering PhD Studentships under the following schemes:

Queen Mary postgraduate research studentships

Queen Mary offers research studentships each year, which are tenable for up to three years. The studentships cover tuition fees and provide maintenance at the basic research council level.

All Queen Mary studentships, which are available in our School, will be listed in the table below (with the funding source listed as QMUL).

*A PhD studentship is a funded postgraduate studentship opportunity either attached to a specific research project or open to postgraduate research applicants in a specific field or academic school. Awards in this category will usually provide a minimum of full standard UK/EU fees and will often include a maintenance stipend. For UK Research Council studentships, the maintenance stipend will meet a nationally agreed minimum level.
